Climate ChangeIs our way of life in the Bay Area sustainable? Is there wisdom to concentrating our agriculture in the Central Valley which features a hot Mediterranean climate (Koppen Csa) or would it be wiser to farm land closer to the California coast which boasts a moderate Mediterranean climate (Koppen Csb)? Will the conservation efforts that we've made post World War II provide us with local sources of food or will farmland in California continue to disappear? Will water sources available to our farmers be controlled in a manner that provides for the security of California's residents? Take a moment to view this KQED video which tracks methane levels in California's Central Valley.
By harnessing our local farm land in the Bay Area and using this land to feed people in our food shed we will be able to substantially reduce the enormous carbon footprint of our current food systems. Our ability to produce enough food to meet the growing population in California relies on the rich, fertile soils of San Mateo County, it's favorable weather and plentiful rains, and it's proximity to the Bay Area. Utilized properly, this region provides us with hope for sustaining our rapidly growing needs. |
